Hiring Service Professionals: Who do you trust and why?


For this blog post, I've asked Joan Rogliano with The Wildflower Group to share her expertise on hiring service professionals!


Uh-oh! You're overwhelmed with decisions and know you need professional guidance about your options. Where should you turn?

First, take a deep breath and understand that you are in control. You will drive the process to find the professionals you need by following these quick tips!

1. Assess which areas you need guidance to create a winning strategy. 


Are these decisions stand-alone, or do you need a team of advisors to collaborate on your behalf?

For example, an IT service provider, carpet installer, or PR professional are all generally isolated choices. A divorce however, requires a team of professionals (financial, real estate, legal, and loan originator) who will work together to help you meet your goals and create the best possible future. Make sure you choose team players!


2. Create a list of what your priorities are when working with a professional. 


This provides you with a feeling that you're prepared with the questions to ask when interviewing them, and assures that your needs and priorities will be met. These individuals will know up front what your expectations are and that you mean business. It also allows you to compare them on the basis of what's important to you. Some areas to consider are:

  • Communication style
  • Product knowledge
  • Sense of humor
  • Listening skills
  • Experience

3. Now you're ready to start the process!


Ask for at least 2-3 referrals from family members, friends, or coworkers, and then do your homework by creating your own "background check". Google each professional and read their profile on LinkedIn to gather information prior to contacting them. You'll find that this also contributes to your feeling prepared and in control.  As you move forward with your decision making, I also recommend that you speak to at least 2 or 3 of these providers to assure that you are getting service in the way that works best for you, and at a fair price.  

4. LTY- Listen to Yourself. 


Personal referrals always help, but think of them as a starting point. Stick to your list of priorities to stay the course of what's best for you. 

While the person providing the referral might have had a great experience, you might feel the suggested professional isn't a good listener, sounds too pushy, is too intense, or the chemistry just isn't right. 

Trust your instincts and take some time to think it over. Never let anyone lead you to believe that you must make an immediate choice on whether to move forward and hire them. Remember, this decision is yours to make, in your time frame!
